Kiwifruit Insect, Mite & Nematode Pests

Kiwifruit in California > Deficiencies & Pests > Insect, Mite & Nematode Pests

Kiwifruit are susceptible to several pests when grown in California including leafroller caterpillars (Platynota stultana, Arpchips argyrospila, Choristoneura rosaceana, and Argyrotaenia citrana), armored scales (Hemiberlesia rapax, H. lataniae, and Aspidiotus nerii), and the box elder bug (Boisea trivittata). Additionally, the root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.) can cause malformed roots, poor fruit size, and vine decline. The root knot nematode is more common on sandy soils (UC IPM 2012).
