Orchards are typically planted with a row spacing of 14 to 18 feet and a tree spacing of 6 to 9 feet, depending on expected tree vigor. Trellis systems can be used to train trees and improve access during hand harvest. Trees should be pruned beginning in the first year to shape side branches and achieve desired branch spreading (Reil 2007).
